Wild Privet (Ligustrum vulgare) is a large, bushy semi-evergreen/ deciduous shrub with dull green, lance-shaped leaves. In the summer panicles of small, creamy white, unpleasantly scented flowers bloom, followed by small dark purple berries in the autumn.
Also known as Common Privet, Wild Privet (Ligustrum vulgare) is ideal for use as dense hedging in low maintenance gardens. It is also commonly used in wildlife gardens as it's dark purple berries are great for attracting birds.
A fast growing hedging plant, Wild Privet (Ligustrum vulgare) will grow on average 30cm per year. It has an ultimate height of 4 metres and ultimate spread of 4 metres, taking between 10 to 20 years to reach its ultimate height and spread.
When growing Wild Privet (Ligustrum vulgare) it will thrive best in any well-drained, or moist but well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. Due to its hardy nature it can also tolerate poorer soils.
As a hedging plant, we recommend planting Wild Privet (Ligustrum vulgare) 3 plants per metre in a single row, or 5 plants for a double staggered row. Trimming should take place in late winter or early spring for informal hedging. For formal hedging, regular trimming is required during growing season.
