Home HYDRANGEA MOPHEAD BLUE

Hydrangea Mophead Blue, also commonly known as ‘Nikko Blue’, is a flowering deciduous shrub with large, rounded flower heads of a rich blue colour. The flowers are produced in July and will stay all the way through until September/October time.

Also known as Hydrangea Macrophylla, ‘Nikko Blue’ is one of the most popular hydrangeas grown in home gardens and landscapes. They are ideal for use as individual border shrubs, or informal hedging. Due to its hardy nature, Hydrangea Mophead Blue (‘Nikko Blue’) can withstand most places throughout the UK, even in severe winters.

When growing Hydrangea Mophead Blue (‘Nikko Blue’) it will thrive best in moist, well-drained fertile soil in full sun or partial shade. Despite bearing a cultivar name, indicating that they are blue hydrangeas, the flower colour actually depends on the soil pH. To make sure your Hydrangea Mophead Blue (‘Nikko Blue’) produces a blue flower colour your soil must be acidic. In alkaline ground, it will bear pink flowers.

As a hedging plant, we recommend growing Hydrangea Mophead Blue (‘Nikko Blue’) 2 plants per metre, and pruning in the spring removing all flower heads. Hydrangea Mophead Blue (‘Nikko Blue’) has an ultimate height of 2 metres and an ultimate spread of 2.5 metres. It can take up to 10 years for it to reach its ultimate height and spread.

When purchased from Hedgingplants.com, Hydrangea Mophead Blue (‘Nikko Blue’) plants are available as 20 to 30cm high plants in 2 litre pots. Where stocks allow, they are available all year round.
