Sweet Box Hedging Plants

Sweet Box (Sarcococca confusa) is a small evergreen hedging plant with little leathery leaves, suitable for border hedging to line garden beds or edging to paths. Due to their appearance they are sometimes used as an alternative to Box (Buxus) if blight is a problem.

Sweet Box is a very attractive plant with tiny perfumed flowers which appear in winter against dark green shiny leaves. They are often understated shrubs which are incredibly hardy and reliable, and can make a fantastic addition to gardens.

Where other hedging varieties may struggle, Sweet Box can be planted in both direct sunlight and in partially shaded areas. Sweet Box grow in moderately fertile soil, and are also tolerant of atmospheric pollution and dry shade. They can survive lime or acid soils and need no pruning.

Small creamy white flowers bloom on the Sweet Box during the winter or spring months, and are followed by small berries. The Sweet Box is a fragrant plant shrub which exudes a pleasant smell throughout the year. This, combined with its lovely appearance, means that Sweet Box is a remarkably underutilised shrub which looks great whatever the season.
