Hornbeam

Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) is a large, hardy, evergreen plant or tree that can be used as an alternative to Green Beech (Fagus sylvatica), due to its tolerance of poor conditions. Its leaves are long and ovate with noticeable serrated edges. In the summer, the leaves are a delightful green, turning yellow in the autumn and pale chocolate brown in the winter.

Also known as Common Hornbeam, Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) makes the perfect hedge for keeping out noise, pollution and wind. It is great for any kind of formal, tidy hedging and works great as a privacy screen.

A tough and resilient hedging plant, Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) will thrive in most conditions, including wet sites, frost pockets and shady sites. As a hedging plant, we recommend planting Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) 3 plants per metre in a single row, or 5 per metre in a staggered double row, and trimming in late summer.

A fast-growing hedge, Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) can reach an ultimate height of 12+ metres, and an ultimate spread of 8 metres - although it can take Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) more than 50 years to reach its ultimate height and spread.

When purchased from Hedgingplants.com, Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) plants are available in a huge range of sizes.
