Japanese Holly Hedging Plants

Japanese Holly Box Leaved (Ilex crenata) makes an excellent choice of low growing hedging plant, if box blight is a problem. The shiny leaves are spine free and the plants have a dense bushy habit, which makes them pest and disease resistant.

This dense foliage makes it a popular option for ornamental plants, attractive hedging and also a success amongst bonsai enthusiasts. In appearance it is remarkably similar to Box hedging, but is distinguishable by its alternate leaf arrangement.

Japanese Holly is an uncommon plant in the UK, but in North America it is commonly planted as a hardy alternative to Box. It is well suited to harsher temperatures and environments, and can tolerate colder temperatures and coastal locations.

If left untrimmed they will produce black fruits in autumn and small white flowers in the summer. These can create an attractive, wild appearance on Japanese Holly Box Leaved plants, but can be easily trimmed if prefered. It is worth noting that the berries are mildly toxic, and may cause stomach upset if ingested.

Japanese Holly is well suited to most soil varieties, tolerating clay, sand, loam and chalk. Due to its hardy nature, it can be planted in both direct sunlight or partially shaded environments, and in alkaline or acidic soil.
