COMMON BOX

Common Box (Buxus sempervirens) is a popular, evergreen hedging plant that can be easily trimmed and shaped as topiary. It is a slow-growing plant that features small, dark green leaves; most commonly used as low, ornamental hedging or edging plant. In the spring, you can expect to see groups of small, pale yellow flowers appear, which will attract several types of wildlife - including bees.

As a large, slow-growing evergreen plant, on average the Common Box will grow 10-15cm per year; with an ultimate height of 4-8 metres and a spread of 4-8 metres. With such a slow growth rate, the Common Box (Buxus sempervirens) can take up to 50 years to reach its maximum height and spread.

Adaptable, the Common Box (Buxus sempervirens) is a hardy, easy to grow plant that will thrive most in well-drained soil and partial to full shade. When planting, extra care should be taken as Common Box can be scorched by the sun and strong winds.

As a hedging plant, we recommend planting Common Box (Buxus sempervirens) 3-4 plants per metre, and trimming in early June. Although, following tradition Common Box is trimmed on Derby Day.

When purchased from Hedgingplants.com, Common Box (Buxus sempervirens) plants are available in a huge range of sizes. These include as bare root or rootballed plants from November to April, or as pot grown plants which can be planted all year round.
