Blackthorn Hedging Plants

Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) (Sloe) is a large deciduous shrub, aptly named because of its thorns and dark bark. Blackthorn is commonly used in native hedgerows, as its thorns make it a fantastic choice for security. In the UK and northern Europe, Blackthorn is also very popular for protection against cattle or other livestock.

Blackthorn is an easy-to-grow native shrub that can come in a wide range of sizes. It can be planted in almost any moist well-drained soil, and should be planted somewhere where it can receive sunlight. During spring, white flowers often develop on the plant, which develop into small black fruits, commonly called sloe. Though the fruits of the plant are quite tart, they are most famously used for the making of sloe gin.
