Thuja is a large, fast growing conifer which will produce a superb dense hedge - providing a good windbreak and noise filtering properties. They are more economical than English Yew (Taxus baccata) but, similarly, can be pruned hard back and will regenerate from the wood. They are slower in growth than Leylandii shrubs, so are easier to maintain.
Thuja leaves are commonly used for a number of medicinal purposes, as well as in a few foods and beverages and in manufacturing. Thuja plants have a distinctive foliage, made up of flat sprays of tiny scale-like leaves.
This plant grows well in both exposed and sheltered environments, and should be planted in moist, well-drained soil. Thuja shrubs are tolerant of most soil conditions, including those with a acidic and alkaline presence. When planting them, take care to protect from drying winds, scale insects and conifer aphids, especially when young.
