Lonicera (Hedging Honeysuckle) is a medium-sized evergreen shrub with tiny green or golden coloured leaves, commonly used as a dense formal hedge.
Lonicera make up a large species featuring over 180 varieties, native to many parts of the northern hemisphere. Lonicera are hardy plants and can be planted in both sheltered or exposed environments, and in almost any well drained soil.
Lonicera often exhibit fragrant flowers during the spring which can be followed by small berries. Left to develop, these can provide an appealing wild aesthetic in gardens or can be trimmed back for more conventional hedging. During the spring and summer Lonicera hedging really comes to life, with the flowers imbuing the garden with a pleasant aroma and the berries and dense foliage providing attractive cover and food for nesting birds.
