Green Beech (Fagus sylvatica) is one of our most popular species with its familiar wavy edged leaves, these emerge in spring and are delicate pale green at first fluttering in the slightest breeze becoming darker green and more robust by summer. As autumn progresses they take on rich hues of gold and coppery orange before turning russet brown in winter. 

To be precise, Green Beech (Fagus sylvatica) is a deciduous plant however if it is trimmed regularly it will retain most of its russet brown leaves during the winter providing shelter and privacy all year round.

Use for... any kind of formal or neat garden hedge. Great for filtering noise and pollution, and for wildlife too.

Growth rate... average to fast 30-60cms per year.

Ideal hedge height... Green Beech (Fagus sylvatica) is a versatile hedging plant, ideal for any height from 80cm up to 5 metres or more.

Situation & Soil... Green Beech (Fagus sylvatica) is a tough and easy plant, its only real dislikes are dense shade and wet boggy soil (where Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) will grow much better and give a similar look). Beech is also a great choice for chalky soil. We recommend Rootgrow and Bonemeal when planting to get your new hedge off to a great start.

Plant description... these are young two year old bare rooted plants 60-80cm high, very economical and easy to transport and plant. A typical bundle of these plants may be seen in the photo above.

Planting distance... for a Beech (Fagus sylvatica) hedge we recommend 3 plants per metre in a single row or 5 per metre in a double staggered row, for a really dense hedge these small plants can be planted at 7 per metre.

Planting season... these bare rooted plants are supplied during the correct planting season from November until early April.

Trim in... late summer.
